OS: WIN2000
CPU/Ram: AMD 800MHz Duron 128AM
Comment:

if you put in a cpu that is not designed for the motherboard. ie: Put a 1GHz cpu on a motherboard that is designed for up to 800MHz. Would it fry the mobo? Is it a question about chipsets?
Thanks for any responces

it will not fit into the socket.
if it does fit, it will fry the cpu and possible the motherboard

Don't ever try it or force the cpu into its socket otherwise you might end up bending the pins and the cpu may no longer work.

If it is the same socket type, and I assume it is otherwise that would just be silly, the motherboard will either detect the CPU multiplier incorrectly and run it at a lower speed, or it might run it in safe mode at a very low speed. It might not boot at all. I doubt it would fry the CPU though.

There are usually BIOS updates though that will increase the settings. Most of the time when a motherboard says it only supports up to 800Mhz for example, it is because no cpu existed that ran faster than that at the time.

What MOBO you got?

I assume, Rex_p that you have a 1GHz AMD CPU (Duron or Athlon) that you’d like to run on a MOBO that runs an 800MHz Duron now. If so, your MOBO manufacturer may have a BIOS that will allow it. If not, the CPU will probably run at 800MHz but, if it is a Duron or Athlon, it will probably run.

Yeah, this is what I am talking about Chiefey! I have an ASUS something or another that will run up to 800MHz Duron, I believe, but I want to throw in a 1GHz or faster Athlon.

Which model of ASUS MOBO do you have?

Do a Google search and it will take you to the ASUS website page for that MOBO. Then, check the information there and under the different BIOS versions.

Many ASUS MOBOs will accommodate 800MHz-1GHz or faster CPUs with the correct BIOS version.
