Subject: What was the max size EDO came in?OS: XP ProCPU/Ram: Athlon FX-53/2GB |
Comment: I just aquired an old computer here. I'd like to run Windows XP a little faster on it, and it currently has 96mb of RAM, in the form of 6x16MB EDO ram. What was the maximum size EDO memory came in? This computer has a Pentium 2-300 in it.

Reply: (edit)It is one thing to try to fit as much memory as you can into that PC, but you have to realise there is a max memory matrix for that board and exceeding that is just a waste of time and ram. You are entitled to try to run XP on any system, what is counterproductive is your not being able to enjoy the XPerience. List of lists.

Reply: (edit)I've already felt the XPerience. I've already got XP installed on my two kick-arse gaming rigs :-) I'd like to use this old thing for some experimenting. The chipset is able to cache up to 1GB, but I doubt that EDO memory comes that big. Anyone know EDO ram well enough to answer my question :) Thanks

Reply: (edit)EDO RAM came in sims of up to 32MB. As these cost a couple of hundred dollars each, they are fairly scarce. Remember EDO sims need to be installed in matching pairs.

Reply: (edit)I have a shoe box full of 72-pin SIMMs...FPM & EDO. 4, 8, 16, 32MB. I never saw 64MB EDO SIMMs, but they may have been made. There are also 168-pin EDO DIMMs. I think 32MB is the biggest you're gonna find, so 6 x 32 = 192MB. Really not enough for a decent "XPerience". I suggest you downgrade the OS to Win98SE or WinME...it'd run a hell of a lot better, even at 96MB Asus A7N8X-X 1800+ @ 8.5 x 200MHz 768MB PC3200 2.5-3-3-7 Asus A9550GE/TD 128MB WinME/WinXP Pro

Reply: (edit)"Anyone know EDO ram well enough to answer my question :)" Even though most of the PII chipsets can allow 1G of memory, so what !!; you have six probably SIMM sockets, and even if your memory subsystem on that board allows 1Gig of ram, is the experiment worth the money to be spent ? To me it doesn't because you still have your CPU's speed as a bottleneck, but eitherway, it's eventually your call. List of lists.

Reply: (edit)"This seller has quite a few of these up for auction, so careful bidding may allow you to get three pairs of 64 megabyte EDO SIMMs for less" The "buy it now" price plus shipping comes to $51 for 256MB...that's a fair chunk of change to throw at an old system. Reply: (edit)Thanks for all the info! I just read that most motherboards will only accept 32mb SIMMS in each socket. Do you guys know for a fact that this is true?

Reply: (edit)Jam, if the statement above is true, or if the PC wouldn't boot with a 64mb module, could you please consider mailing 4 of your 32mb modules to me? (60ns) I'll give you a good amount of dough for them. :-) Again, thanks for the help from all of you.

Reply: (edit)I've never heard that. I ran a pair of 64 megabyte SIMMs on an Asus P55T2P4 with no problems. Ran a pair of 16 megabyte SIMMs in the other two slots. I wouldn't try it on a VX chipset board though. But you don't have a VX chipset. Probably an LX. The 32 meg SIMMs are going for pretty cheap these days, and three pairs would be a fair amount of memory.
