first of all think about what CPU/Processor you want to use. Then think about whether you need to use a separate graphics card or if you will just want built in / on board graphics (depends on what 3d graphics performance you will need). Then think about what size case you will be using - full size ATX or a smaller compact one. Then you know what format of motherboard you need and if you tell us that, then peple can suggest a motherbaord

ok so this is what I know I'm going to use CPU INTEL CORE 2 DUO (prob. 2.66) VID CARD NVIDIA 8800 GTS
I just wasn't sure about the North bridge or South bridge. I'm not sure what either are used for, so in turn not sure what to look for.

Get a board based on the Intel P35 chipset. If you have any intentions to overclock or tweak the BIOS settings, I suggest you stay away from Intel boards. There's some articles here that should be helpful:
