Hi 2cOled ,Jam, all
okay obviously angered 'Teh computer godz of windoze' who visited upon me a blue smoke genie this month after trying to ressurect an old hdd for Linux and well pfffft went the lot.
:( no idea why it just did, just plain wrong imo ...moving on....
so going to salvage the ram and graphics , (mobo and cpu who knows, havnt got the resource to test out or trust it anymore) so in the market to replace, ive saved ~(read stayed in ) for a base home build mobo and cpu .
ive noticed a range of new mobos appearing 780 x38 (im not sure phenom is in the game yet, so ill stick with intel.)
is there a sensible mobo out there not going to cost the earth?
i dont need a quad but Im not sure wether a E8400 or E6750? the few games i play UT04/3 maybe crysis again cod4
What are people currently buying? (x48 tooo expensive)
is the new stuff worth the outlay ? or go for a plain vanilla ip35

[old stuff salvaged 7800 gt oc, some ram pc8500 a sata drive,]

pearls of wisdom i await
cheers

Phenoms have been out since Nov of 07.

If you aren't a high performance pc user, then you don't need to buy or build a high performance pc.

Intels X38 and X48 are high performance chipsets. Intels P31 or P35 are the middle of the road chipsets and Intels G31, G33 and G35 are Intels budget chipsets.

AMD's current chipsets is pretty simple. You have AM2 and the AM2+ chipsets. The diff between those two chipsets is the AM2+ supports higher DDR2 memory and uses H/T 3.0, but only the Phenoms right now can take full advantage of H/T 3.0 on the AM2+ chipset.

If your a mild gamer, then Core 2 Duo E6750 or E8200 is a great choice for the price. So is the Athlon 64 X2 6000+ or 5600+.

2gb of DDR2 Ram is dirt cheap which should do you good if you're a mild pc user.

If you already have the graphics card and hard drive then your fine. The 7800GT is good card for a mild gamer. So no need to go buy another graphics card

I don't know where you stand in power supplies, but get a power supply with at least 500w and 28amp on the 12v rail or higher.

Hi
Cobra_R

thanks for the reply , had a look round yesterday @ pc fair seems 8400 are still pricey , weird mix of mobos P5K SE budget , Giga x38DS5 or striker extreme formula , price doubled / tripled.

picked up a corsair 520 hx psu so theres a start.
Think i will wait a week longer theres
no E8200 about 'on the street' amazon ran a loss leader on the E8400

the X38DS4 or DS5 is looking a winner at the moment.
cheers.
