Hello,
I just recently got this HUGE IBM tape drive. (I "collect" old computers and I told a local computer recycler that was closing to put aside any old or odd items for me.) Well, this is one of the items he left for me. An IBM 9348-002. Here is a picture of it:

http://www.verifiedcomputers.com/itemDetails.cfm?itemID=2000576

It weighs almost 100 pounds and is very large. What on earth am I going to do with this thing. Is it possible to connect it to a PC with a special SCSI card? If anyone has any suggestions, please POST.

Thanks!

P.S. I didn't pay $4,995

To use it with a PC you would need to find a driver. I don't believe that's gonna happen.

I really don't know. I just thought maybe I could use it somehow instead of just throwing away a completely working machine that someone payed thousands for...

The 9348 is intended for use in "General Business Areas" such as administrative/bookkeeping, word processing centers, and printer areas and is NOT designed for use in "Quiet Office" environments.

That was back then, at this time objectively speaking, there is nothing you really need that thing for besides a using it as a door stop, if you are an avid collector then it's use should not matter anyway.

According to the details this unit is for a AS400 which is really an office mini computer. Last one I worked on was about a third the size of a BMW Mini.

(mini = small mainframe)

Were you aware of this?

As such I doubt you would find a pc driver for it, but I could be wrong.

Good Luck - Keep us posted

No, I wasn't aware of that. I wasn't even aware that I was getting this thing. Maybe I'll just put it on ebay with no reserve and for local pickup only. I'm sure somewhere someone will want it for something.

Here in the Uk we have hardware brokers who specialise in second user computer equipement.

They are in touch with companies who have the relevant computer for the peripheral devices the are selling.

Good luck - Keep us posted.

"I'll just put it on ebay with no reserve and for local pickup only."

You'd need a little patience too, there is one listing started Oct-04 14:39:26 according to eBay's timestamp, that's still there possibly because it's BIN only offer. Who knows, you may be luckier if you list yours for a penny.

Goodluck.

Well I found another local computer recycler that gave me $50 dollars for it. He's probably going to sell it for at least $200. But I got it for free so that's ok.
Thanks for all your input
