ok so this is a weird question i'm thinking because i've never heard of a problem like mine, but maybe it's common and i'm just overexaggerating. so i'm trying to plug my speakers into my computer and when i hold the jack close to the "Line in" port, the computer shuts off! so i'm thinking stupidly, "uhh, is it because my sound card is too close to the PS?" so i move the sound card down to the bottom-most slot and turn on the computer again. i slowly move the speaker jack from a 2nd pair of speakers to the "in" port again and nothing happens. i plug it in, then the speaker catches on FIRE on the inside! so i'm like "oh crap!" and unplug it, then the computer shuts off again. what is up? help! thanks =)

I assume that your speaker is (was?) a powered speaker.
The problem is (was?) probably the speaker and its power supply.

You plug speakers into the speaker out jacks, not the "line-in" jack.

actually the speakers aren't powered, so it has no ac adaptor. so i'm thinking it could be the sound card or the computer's power supply?

just as an update: the speaker was toast so that was obviously thrown away. i replaced the sound card and it works perfectly (better than before since it's an upgraded sound card).
my old sound setup was weird (strange technicians used to work for HP). the sound card was built into the modem since it was a "voice modem w/ speakerphone." however, the modem needed to be attached to a seperate audio riser card to work, which is where the problem lay i believe. in any case, the modem was also ditched since it had to go if i were to install the new sound card. yes, this comp is from the days when a 56k modem was top notch networking.
