I have a maxtor HD that has a burnt curcuit on the bottom. What screwdriver do i need to take it apart safely? Its a Maxtor 250GB internal M# 6Y250PO. I heard its something like a Torx T(something) but im not sure.
Thanks
James

If you open a HDD, it becomes a doorstop the second the internal components are exposed to the air.

Doorstop? It's not heavy enough to stop a door. I guess paperweight is more sensible.

Torx are just like allen wrenches---they come in different sizes, so there is no such thing as "a Torx".

Worse, some are "tamper proof"---they look vaguely like an allen, but with a little vertical pin sticking up in the center, which means the Torx you must use has a hole in the center.

There ARE some better tool stores that carry "Tamper resistant" torx wrenches.

If the circuit board is burned, you probably won't be able to fix it, anyway.

that's not true. An allen wrench as 8 flat sides whereas a torx wrench is in a star pattern.

See figures C, D & E vs. figure G. Hard Drives (as I recall) have a three sided security bolt - a modified allen head if you will. But different manufacturers might use different screw types.

Bu the way, it *is* possible to open a hard drive without ruining it. However, I would never attempt it on a working drive. Except mabey an old drive that has lived out its usefulness. See this: http://case-mods.linear1.org/hard-drive-mod/

I did not mean to imply that Torx were EXACTLY like TORX, I should have said "similar"---they are a recessed drive, and are used in similar situations as allen.

You can not fix this with any kind of screwdriver. If it is bad, replace it. Period.
