I have decided to buy a new computer rather that upgrade.

What processor do I need?

I do no gaming. Mostly office apps, web browsing, and lots of photo editing.

I now have a 432 K6-2 and except for working with photographs it’s doing reasonably well but it takes forever to edit pictures.

Right now there are some very inexpensive Celleron based systems available (HP system with monitor for $500 at Wal-Mart for example) but I am not at all impressed with the three-year-old Celleron I use at work. I am leaning towards a 2G P-4. Do I need the new HT technology or is that just hype. How about the AMD processors. How do they compare to P-4s?

AMDs are good. IMHO the new HT technology is mostly hype. I can't imagine an advantage for a home user.

Just in general, AMD Duron is low-grade, comparable to the Celeron. The higher-grade cards are AMD Athelon and Intel Pentium.

You'll save some money buying a computer with an AMD. Some people that prefer one or the other, for various reasons.

Happy shopping,
Bob
