OS: You tell me...
CPU/Ram: K6-3 500mhz/128mb ram
Product: Custom
Comment:

I have my first computer laying around and i'm thinking about putting it to use... just having trouble deciding on an OS for it. What would you use on the following and why?

CPU: AMD K6-3 500mhz
RAM: 2x64mb
HDD: 10gb... maybe 20...
GFX: Some random old onboard

Thanks!

Regards, Mortagen!

Win 98 would fly on it. Win2K would run OK.
There is no doubt an old version of linux that would suit but my experience with that breed of operating system has been limited and less than satisfying.
I have run XP on a 500mhz system but with 512mb ram. Would not try it with less than 256mb. It would install but you would be disappointed/frustrated with the performance

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

Win98SE or if you're daring, WinME.

I've always found Windows 2000 as Microsoft's best operating system... i might give 2000 a run at this old box. Thanks!

As Richard59 said, Win2K will run OK, but Win98SE (or WinME) would probably be the better choice.

i have used xp pro on a amd 500 system with 256mb ram and it is not that good, a bit slow. But I have found XP pro on Pentium3 500mhz systems to be OK with 256mb ram and not too bad with 128mb ram.
I assume this is beacuse the amd cpu is inferior. I am not convinced that win2000 would be better than XP (because they are similar).
I would personally go for win98SE

In my own experience, If U like 9X platform I recomend Win ME, because a better USB support. If U prefer the NT platform then Win 2K SP4 is the better choice, more stable and less resources consuming.

On anyway I recomend that is better if U try to get some more memory, I think that U can find an online seller and get perhaps a couple of 128 MB sticks at good price.

I have a Celeron 400 MHz machine running Win2k with 384 MB RAM (the maximum for my motherboard) and it runs very smoothly.

in the uk you could get used 128mb sticks on ebay for probably about the equivalent of about 6 US dollars for a pair. I assume they are also cheap in other countries. There are not that many people who are interested in buying 128mb sticks of PC100 ram and there is a lot of that ram about from decommissioned office PCs etc

Definitely, DEFINITELY, Windows 2000 with SP4.

Win2K has got to be the fastest OS I've ever used (not counting the DOS/Win 3.11 combination). It boots and runs faster (in my experience) than 98SE/ME, and it's built on the very stable NT kernel.

I'd stay far away from 98SE/ME. On my old P2-300 machine, 98SE boots slower than 2000, and won't play DVDs without dropping frames. 2000, however, plays DVDs fine using the same PowerDVD software. It also launches programs faster, and even webpages seem to load a tad quicker.

If you upped the RAM to 256, you could even try XP on it (though I've noticed that some Socket/Super Socket 7 boards do not like XP).

Super Pentium III: NOW WITH 7950GT AGP!
PIII-S cpu overclocked to 1.66GHz--As fast as a 2.5GHz P4!
2GB of PC2700 memory
QDI Advance 12T board
Audigy 2
Vista Home Premium

Good thing is you can try a few.
QNX and Beos may be good choices depending on the video.
Older versions of linux may be OK.

Why? Because. If you are playing then have fun.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.

The motherboard ram is maxed out. And if i had to pick between 2000 and 98 it was always going to be 2000 anyways as it is my favorite Windows OS. It's simply faster and more reliable/stable than the rest!

Thanks for the support everyone! W2K it is!

PS. I don't like XP... and Vista is even worse in my books! And Aero sucks compared to the KDE/Beryl Combination!!!

RedHat linux 6 & 7, both will fly on your system. Btw, i have never tried Win2000 but as far as i know you can`t play games on it. So if you want to use Microsoft`s OS, then in my humble opinion Win98Se is perfect for your system including playing games :-). And i still have RedHat 6.2 on my old Pentium 1 166mhz with 16mb ram and 4mb video card. With Afterstep GUI installed.

Windows 2000 plays everything XP does, and that includes everything the 9x kernel can't... mainly newer games. I hope the Alky Project supports or accidently supports W2K so i can run DX10 games on my new rig. I'll only be playing age of empires 2 on this machine anyways.

Thanks!

Regards, Mortagen
