I have an old PC I am parting out, it is an AMD 450 K6 system. My question is, is this different from the new cases as far as a motherboard fitting? I was told it is an old style and the new MB that use Athlon CPUs will not fit.

You probably have an AT case. What that means is the power supply works directly off the on/off buttons on the case and the connectors for the motherboard are different. Also the back of the case, where the motherboard projects, is different. ATX cases have power supplies that are controlled by the motherboard. Your power supply is probably too small anyway. Just buy another case & PS. The power supplies also have an extra connector that is needed for the P4 MBs and is used by some graphics cards.
