I just dropped my 6 month old toshiba from about 4 feet on to the plywood ground and it still works. (screen was open) batt fell out, cd rom drive fell out, but I put them back in and screen cd rom and batt all work fine. Just a small dent on the left corner were it hit. I was just curios, whan manuafacture do u think makes the most rugged laptops? I'm abusive to my computer and i might be getting a new one soon and giving this one to my mom.

A foot foot drop to a plywood floor would tend to make me believe that Toshiba makes a very rugged laptop.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

An older Itronix...6250Pro or earlier. They'll survive hundreds of drops of 3', work in rain and hail, etc. The greyscale screen models are perfectly visible in direct sunlight.

No floppy or cd-rom drives. Nothing else I know of holds a candle to 'em.

They don't have much use in today's world with the fastest being 300Mhz. Later model Itronix machines are less durable and my Panasonic Toughbook would likely fly to pieces if dropped 4 feet.

Try dropping your Toshiba on a ceramic floor and see what happens.... In otherwords you can't answer this kind of question... too many variables.

What hieght?
What kind of floor?
what part of the laptop hits first?
How big is the laptop? (bigger laps are heavier... more weight, more damage.)
How big is the screen? (bigger screens break easier)
Was it on or off when dropped? If the HDD was running and in the middle of something (in other words heads not parked) then you will most certainly do some damage to the disks when the heads smash into and scratch them.

The best thing to do is consider ALL laptops delicate and avoid dropping them, throwing them, bathing with them, sitting on them.... etc.

We've been testing some "military grade" laptops/notebooks where I work for possible use in the field. The units aren't "branded" but I believe they're built by IBM. They have a heavy rubber "armor" to protect them from falls & are supposedly more dust & water resistant than the average store-bought unit. Of course, they cost at least twice as much too.

We've lost quite a few laptops to to abuse & neglect..."uhhhh, I left it on the trunklid of my car & drove off"..."uhhh, I set it down on the dirt pile just for a second & it slid off & fell into the 6' deep trench". The heck with hiring people who have 1/2 a brain...let's just buy them better equipment so they don't have to think as hard...LOL
