hey!
what kind of power connector is this? can it be converted to a regular one?

Custom Build:
Pentium 4 3GHz 1MB L2
1GB DDR400 2-Channel RAM
2x80GB WD SATA HDD RAID0
DVD+/-RW CDRW DVD-RAM

is it on the power supply unit? what do you want to convert, the 24 pin PSU plug to fit a 20 pin motherboard? or a 20 pin power supply unit to fit the 24 pin motherbaord?.

The ATX standard was changed in Feb 2003. One of the changes was to replace the "old" ATX 20-pin (2 x 10) connector with a 24-pin (2 x 12) connector.
What seems to be the problem? If that's an actual picture of your board & PSU plug, it would appear that you have a newer board that conforms to the ATX12V 2.x standard & therefore has a 24-pin connector.
What are you trying to do?
(BTW, don't double-post)

well, that's exactly it (sorry for the double post!)
i'm trying to convert this mini atx plug (24 pin) into a standard sized one, and i don't know if the pinout is the same as a normal PSU.
Custom Build:
Pentium 4 3GHz 1MB L2
1GB DDR400 2-Channel RAM
2x80GB WD SATA HDD RAID0
DVD+/-RW CDRW DVD-RAM

note the size of the atx power connector compared to the ram stick slot beside it: it's like a miniaturized one
Custom Build:
Pentium 4 3GHz 1MB L2
1GB DDR400 2-Channel RAM
2x80GB WD SATA HDD RAID0
DVD+/-RW CDRW DVD-RAM

huzzah!
i have determined (from pinout diagrams and the colors of the wires) that the pinout should be exactly the same, except for wire # 20 (-5 VDC). there is no white wire in the original power supply P1 connector, but the motherboard has this pin, and should be capable of accepting the connection!

"i'm trying to convert this mini atx plug (24 pin) into a standard sized one"
It's not unusual for OEM's such as HP/Compaq to have proprietary hardware in their systems, especially the PSU. The wiring is one of the things that is sometimes different. Connect a standard PSU to a proprietary board & you'll either fry the board or the PSU, or both. Not to mention the possibility of frying the CPU, RAM, etc.
So I guess my question to you is WHY do you want to convert it?

Probably because he overlooked the fact that his "Slimline" system came stock with an industrial type "Mini-ITX" motherboard before getting an ATX PSU.

yeah, i probably did. but the fact is that i got it cheap (less than $300 canadian), brand new. and this is a neat project for me.
and the thing is, the pinout and wiring of this weird psu is the same as a regular psu, the only difference is the physical size of the connector. even the wires are the same width (according to AWG). but the original psu is only 108watts, which is pitiful, and like i said, this is neat project for me. so, thats all good! i'll do it!
