What is this? I want one

Specs: Windows 7
This computer guy uses a piece of hardware in the op system reinstall process and I'd like to know what it is or any similar product so I can get one for my own use. He takes the HD out of the laptop and puts it in this device. Then the contents of the HD come up on the monitor. He selects the files to save. Then I think these files are transfered to an external HD. Then he wipes clean the laptop's HD, then reinstalls the op system and then the files that were selected to keep. And what would you want to do the same with a desktop computer?

Why can't you just save the files to an external drive without taking the drive out of the laptop (or desktop)? That sounds simpler to me.

The "device" is probably just a computer with a disk docking station.

They make devices that are specificly designed to copy data, do drive imaging, wipe the drive, etc and do it to several drives at the samee time. These devices can cost up to several thousand dollars.
Here is one such device, notice they say to contact them for pricing? That usually means it cost and arm and a leg, not something the home user can afford.

Do what ijack suggested and save your files to an external drive.

I think the problem is that
the laptop is so corrupted it won't boot so he takes the HD out -does that make any sense? I don't know.

Yes, that makes sense. He's just connecting the disk drive as a secondary disk on another computer so that he can transfer files. All you need is something like this cable.

The dock I use can take both SATA and IDE drives - 3.5 and 2.5 - great bit of kit, probably got it from CPC but I don't see it listed any longer.
