Does it play commercial CD's - try more than one?

Go to Device Manager and see if there are any errors showing against CD drives.

If not It might be that the CD lens requires cleaning. Put "cd drive cleaner" in Google - I'm in the UK so I only get UK hits.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Your optical drive is a IDE/ATAPI (ATA) and not a SATA interface and it is old. There are 2 lasers in a combination optical drives. As mentioned by Derek, the lens may by dirty, or the laser may have burned out.

How did you determine the CD function is not working? What happens if you try to burn files to a CDR?

.......If there are no errors in the device manager under cd/dvd device, it is mostly likely, as mentioned above, old, and it's time! Luckily, they are cheap to replace.

To err is human but to really screw things up, you need a computer!
