what is chipset support? new hd install

Compaq / Presario 6029us

Specs: Windows XP-home, AMD Athlon XP 2100+/ 1GB RAM
Norton Ghost informed me my HD is about to fail.
Trying to install new HD without recovery CDs & inability to Ghost.
I believe I found the drivers I need on HP's download website, for drivers that are not included in Windows XP.
One thing I'm not sure about, is a download on Hp website for "NVidia Chipset support which contains ""NVIDIA nforce 1 & 2 chipset support"; what the heck is that & is it something I need to include on the drivers CD I'm burning to use during install of Windows XP on new hard drive in HP Compaq Presario 6029us?

Yes you need to include those drivers for a clean install. The chipset drivers are for your motherboard. You need to install them in order to enable all the functions of the motherboard.

Any drivers that are on the XP disc are roughly 10 yrs old & the HP drivers aren't much newer. Here's your system specs:

Hopefully you've added an AGP video card by now?

Here's the nForce2 chipset driver package. The version from 2004 is as new as it gets. This package contains all of the following:

• Audio driver 4.42 (WHQL)
• Audio utilities 4.44
• Ethernet driver 4.42 (WHQL)
• GART driver 4.36 (WHQL)
• Memory controller driver 3.38 (WHQL)
• SMBus driver 4.04 (WHQL)
• Installer 4.46
• IDE NVIDIA driver 4.46 (WHQL)

NOTE: make sure to install service pack 3 before installing the drivers package. Get it here:

Oh my goodness. You are an absolute darling! I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your response... not to mention going out of your way to provide links & top notch input. I have really been struggling trying to find answers for everything... & going nuts, spending all day on this. You even answered some of my questions I hadn't asked... like whether I should use that Windows XP SP3 download, which I had considered trying to slipstream with my sp1 ver. Or what to do about updating drivers.
By the way. At one time I bought a new AGP card, & found I then needed an upgraded power supply. I tried to change that, & found this Compaq has some kind of proprietary plug with a 2-prong insert into the motherboard that's not found on other power supplies. I just gave it up. At least it runs the DDR game I most needed video for. I'm just thankful for this PC... great price... it was free... (although out of control with viruses & some dead parts)... given by a friend when I had trouble with my custom build dying after 8 years.... I'm just setting my sights on a new PC next spring or fall, after car repairs, dental work, Christmas, these Computer repairs--- (my monitor went out the day before Norton advised my hard drive is dying), etc... Thank you so much for helping me keep this one going a little longer. May you have an outrageously blessed day. God bless. CC Hemmes
