I bought a cheap board and CPU combo at Fry's for my first build, that way, if something happened, I wasn't out too much money. I got my first build done to give me the experience and went from there. I have since moved up to a little bit more expensive setup but now I don't worry about it because I know what I'm doing. I've built close to 20 computers now and still have a bunch in pieces in different states, ie., no CD, no HD, etc. It becomes an addiction and I'm forever at the <nobr><a class="iAs" style="border-bottom:darkgreen 1px solid;text-decoration:underline;color:darkgreen;background-color:transparent;" href="http://itxt.vibrantmedia.com/al.asp?ipid=7&cc=us&cf=1&ai=4888412&di=120367&ts=20031129044326" target="_blank" oncontextmenu="return false;" onmouseover="kwE(event,120367);" onmouseout="kwL(event);" onmousemove="kwM(120367);">computer</nobr> fair spending money LOL.

It is not only the motherboard, but the chipset. Check the reviews on the chipsets too.
