It is for reading memory cards, the kind you get it digital cameras and smart phones. They come in many different shapes and sizes hence the six slots.

I swear these card reader companies are pulling random numbers out of their behinds. Just like the monitor companies are with their dynamic contrast ratio BS.

But yeah, as StuartS said, it will read different memory cards. Apparently 51 different kinds. SD cards are the most common these days.
