OS: XP
CPU/Ram: 2.8 GHZ/2 GB
Product: Dell Dim. E520
Comment:

I have a Dell Dimension e520 with a Pent D, 2.8 GHz, 2 GB RAM. I booted it up the other day, and at the Windows XP screen I got the BSOD with a 0x0000007B code, and only helpful hint the screen gave me was to run chkdsk. I googled the error code and it seems like it's a mounting issue with one of my volumes. So, I decided to reinstall Windows. When I put in the XP CD (the one that came w/ the computer, and it is not a recovery CD, it's the real thing), the CD boots. Right after the CD says that all the files are loading and that "Setup is Starting Windows", I get the BSOD there too! I pulled out my hard drive and did it again - same thing! The funny thing is is that I can boot into a Linux Live CD just fine. I ran a Memory Test from Knoppix Linux and didn't find anything wrong with the memory. I also removed the RAM and used known good RAM, and still got the same result when booting from an XP CD. I then used another XP CD - this time an original retail CD, but the same BSOD comes up. Does anyone have any help they can give me? Thanks!

try a diff video card or if its onboard video, install a card.
also, reset the cmos with the onboard jumper, or pull the motherboard battery for 10 minutes

So, did you try running chkdsk? Look at the link below for help with chkdsk.

Before running chkdsk reseat all cards, cables and RAM.

If the problem persists then try running a drive fitness test on the harddrive. Get it from the drive manufacturer's site.

This was happening to a friends PC the other day (the windows bit, i did not try Linux). I found removing the network PCI card cured it. When I tried putting the card back in it kept failing to instal in windows (yellow marker in devive manager) even though it was previously working fine and was a make/model that did not need added drivers.
So if there are any add in cards i would try it with them removed.
