I was playing a game, then it shut off. I turned it back on, after I recovered from the shock, and it took one second then shut off again. This time for good. Now it doesn't turn on at all. DEAD. I took it apart and noticed a little orange light on on my MB near the RAM, I think it said in minute font, "RAM light" but I'm not sure. I tried my own testing by taking it out of the case and hooked it directly into the wall, then I hooked a CD drive to it and to see if the drive door would open. It didn't. So I'm not positive that this test proved that it was falty. Also, if it was the PSU, then what could have caused it? It's 450 watts.

Does the cpu fan spin up at all when you start the computer ??

Do the fans in the PSU spin at all when you start the computer ??

If the answer to the above is NO the psu is dead, you may have received a surge from the mains power supply, and the psu took the ful brunt.

Yu dont say what brand it is ??

Connect the psu to the mother board only, disconnect all other components fromt he board and the PSU except the cd rom. If you still have nothing than yu are up for a new PSU.

The other things is how many components and fans do you have in the case ???

IF IT AINT BROKE, DONT FIX IT

green wire...5V? If so, PSU is good, if not, it's bad.

Nothing at all happens when I press the on button. Its a standard PSU. I disconnected everything except for the CD drive and MB but nothing happens. I think I'll get a new PSU.

What green wire? It's a 12 volt PSU.

The green wire only carries 5V which is controlled by the PSU circuit.

All that is required to boot the pc.

If no fans spin up in the psu its dead !!!

But check all the external connections just in case.

Try and get the best PSU you can afford, also get yourself a surge protected power board and place it between the wall mains and the power cord of the powers supply.

I would recommend the Antec or Thermaltake PSU's superb quality, superb voltage output, and extreme stability.

Yu pay the price but worth every dollar.

Good luck

If you remove the PSU from the case & plug it in, it won't turn on...it needs to be connected to the motherboard & turned on by using the case switch. Otherwise, you have to jumper a couple of wires on the motherboard...connect the green to any black.

I didn't have a surge protector! So I'm getting a new PSU. 500 watts.

When a surge occurs, with no suppressor, does it make a noise? Or is there a way to tell if I was surged?

There is no way off telling when you get hit with a power surge unless your computer is on.

Even than all you will notice is the psu will just stop working.

Surge protectors are designed to arrest any such power spikes on the mains, an all that is required if a surge does happen is pressing the reset switch on the power board and carry on as normal.

No real way of telling if it was a surge or not, unless the psu gets tested.
