What type of files are you burning? A stand alone DVD player generally can't play AVI, MPEG, WMV, MP4, etc files. So what you would have to do is convert the files to a format the DVD player does recognize. The conversion can take hours, depending on the file & the speed of your system. You would need a program such as Avi2Dvd (free) or Convert X to DVD (not free) or something similar.

If the files are in anything other than "standard-DVD" format (.vob, .ifo, .bup) you may find that a Divx-player would be more versatile than a DVD-player:

Also, are you finalizing your DVD's when they've finished burning?
