I would presume no modem would actually mean it does not have a modem ??

This is a Modem: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modem

The lack of a Modem on a modern laptop is not something to be overly concerned about. It will be referring to the lack of a 56K dial up modem which was the normal way of getting on-line at one time and laptops often came with one built in. To get on-line with broadband you need a broadband Modem and I have yet to see a laptop with a broadband Modem built in they are usually plug-in devises.

In that case the laptop doesn't know whether there is a Modem connected or not. All it sees is an Ethernet or USB device that just happens to be a Modem. Broadband Modems are often supplied by your ISP as part of the package.

Stuart a note: Most of laptops and netbooks now com with ethernet ports and wireless (wifi) modems. It's the dialup modem that is getting rare.

Actually the wi-fi device that comes with Laptops is a wi-fi interface card, not a wi-fi Modem. It is used to connect to a wi-fi router/modem the same way as the Ethernet port is. There is no Modem inside the laptop.
