ok...bear with me here I'm not too tech savvy as you'll soon read...

I have a (fairly old...about 7 years) emachines T2245 that I am trying to install a seagate barracuda 7200.12 hard drive. The power supply (which is only about a year old) does have a long(er) cord, which I suppose is the power cable that fits in there but the smaller input which I think is the data input (?) doesn't go into my computer. Is there a converter I can use? I'd rather not have to install a card because (clearly) I'm not as comfortable with that and can't afford to have someone else do it.

Sorry if this makes no sense, but I can do pictures if needed for clarification.

I think the problem is you bought a SATA drive and your motherboard only has IDE ports. Your old drive has a 40-pin data cable. That won't fit a SATA drive. For that you'd need to get an add-on SATA card and attach the drive there.

Also the power connector that fit your old hard drive won't fit the SATA drive. Since you have a newer power supply it may have a separate SATA power connector. If not you can get an adapter.

Anyway, I think that's what's going on.
