My friend is having problems with his emachine pc. My question is what could be the problem causing it not to boot if the hard drive is formated and bios resetted? When he first tried to boot it it said theres no os installed. So I told him to put the system restore in a restart. When the pc came back on it said this could'nt be opened: ghosterr.txp. I might have the file name incorrect because he told me this over the phone.
System Specs
Asus A7N8X-X

512MB PC3200 2.5-3-3-7
ATI Radeon 9600 XT 128MB
Western Digital 20GB
WinXP Home SP1

Sounds like the hard drive headed "South".
But you really need to tell us more. What was he doing when this happened, or did he just go to boot one day and nothing? Did he add any hardware or software?
Desktop, laptop brand etc...

Ghosterr.txT has something to do with Symatec Ghost 7.5 whom eMachine uses for their Restore CD. Read through THIS thread found at bootdisk.info.

I belive he booted one day and it happen.

Well great thread but that tells you what to do to restore OS, what it isn't saying is what caused pc to lose everything and I think it sounds like you need a new hard drive and to unplug all peripherals, clean restore cd and install OS.

"what could be the problem causing it not to boot if the hard drive is formated and bios resetted? When he first tried to boot it it said theres no os installed"
Of course there's no OS installed...he formatted the HDD. What do you think formatting does?

Jam,

I think this is a grammar problem here...sounds like he has OS there and is simply describing it as "formatted"...later refers to system restore which would not be there either if only formatted!

Hey Three504,
I just noticed your system specs...very similar to mine. Why aren't you running your CPU at 200MHz FSB? You've got PC3200 & it appears your CPU is unlocked, you're losing performnce by running ASYNC (CPU at one bus speed & RAM at another). Lower the multi to 10x, raise the FSB to 200MHz, & set the RAM at 100%. You may have to increase the CPU voltage a little.

I know I formatted (cleared the hd) and put the sys restore cd in to reinstall windows wx and then the error came up.
Hey Jam thanks for the oc tip I will try right now. When you say "set the RAM at 100%" does that mean ram frequency? My voltage is at 1.65 right no maybe whats causing my temps to be 50c while playing the sims 2.

Jam never mind the above post and the voltage was 1.60 not 1.65, but when I set the multi to 10x200 it won't boot. I even tried raising the vcore to 1.75 in .5 increments and still nothing. So I set the mutli to 11 and FSB to 200Mhz with the RAM 100% and it boots at 2200Mhz.
I can give you all the settings of the cpu bios screen if you need it.

Good for you...that's even better! And 50C under load isn't bad at all. My 1800+ has been idling in the 50s lately due to the extreme hot weather we've been having (plus no A/C in my house). My system is completely stable...I'm not the least bit concerned about the temps.
I suggest you stress test your system at those settings though to see if it holds up. I've switched from Prime95 to Stress Prime 2004...it's basically the same program with a friendlier user interface
