hi, i had a 430W PSU(1 and half years old). now i just bought a new 500W cuz my old one is dead. i dont know what happened. just yesterday morning before i went to school, i turned my PSU power off(1st time to do this). after about 6 hours back from school, when i tured that switch on(the switch on the back of the PSU). a little bit smoke came out from the PSU fan for 1-2 seconds, then some strong smell. then i knew the PSU was dead. well, the LED light on the mobo was on, but nothings happen when i pressed the PC power botton. i felt lucky cuz it didnt catch fire when i was in school. but how could that be? short circut? now, i am afraid to turn off my PSU even i am going to vacation for 2 weeks.

Why tell your story without mentioning the make/model of the PSUs? Are these $15-20 "El-Cheapo" brand? Or $50-75+ name brand?

Those things happen. Leaving your power supply on while on vacation is not a good idea. If you are afraid to turn the switch off, unplug it from the wall. That's even better, it will protect it from lightning strikes.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

Sorry, but Raidmax is not known for making quality PSUs & I can't believe you would pay $69 for one! Newegg sells that particular model for $20 & the reviews are not good. Plus it only has 13A on the +12 rail. It's not suitable for a modern system.

It wouldn't matter if you got it for free after rebate...it doesn't change the fact that it's a low quality piece of crap

That's for sure. You have proven that "you get what you pay for (after rebate)".
