A socket is the combination of an IP address & a port. That particular error is related to incoming emails. Do you have a problem receiving emails?

I do sometimes have trouble in recieving e-mails with an error no.which varies I think,the one I do get is= 1004 Error no. 0x800CCCOD

Disable your anti virus. According to one site, that might help.

regarding my error problem, I have AVG2011 antivirus program, you say disable it, this can't be a perminent solution surely. Eric

Even though I don't like anti virus programs, disabling it is just a test to find the conflict. I didn't say that you have to leave it that way forever.
