I've decided on getting a 19" CRT monitor after hearing conflicting reports about the 172x. Can anyone recommend a good CRT. I've been looking at Philips, samsung and mitsubishi. Plz note i'm in aus though. What does dot pitch mean, and what's the difference between dot pitch and horizontal dot pitch, I already get refresh rates and resolution, and can you get a CRT that uses a DVI output instead of D-sub. Just simply any recommendations of 19" CRT's that I can get in Australia. Thanks

Do you know what 19" CRTs are available in Australia?

Dot pitch or horizontal dot pitch is the number of pixels per inch that the monitor displays. A higher number is better.
There would be no advantage to getting a monitor that is capable of being connected to a DVI output. It would just mean that the monitor would have to do the digital to analog conversion instead of the graphics card.

Dot pitch is the distance between each pixel (Of the same color). The lower the number the sharper and more clear the picture will be.
I’ve got a 19” Samsung with a 20mm (Horizontal) Dot Pitch and I have to look very close and very hard to see a pixel. The picture is so smooth and lifelike it’s amazing. The difference between diagonal dot pitch and horizontal dot pitch is, the horizontal dot pitch is measured horizontally and the diagonal dot pitch is measured diagonally. Makes sense huh? LOL. They’re basically the same thing, most manufacturers seem to list the horizontal dot pitch in their specs and others like to list the diagonal dot pitch in their specs. And I've seen a few list both.

Thats a bit conflicting, is it better to have more or less, for example a 0.25mm dot pitch or a 0.20mm dot pitch. btw here are a few models available:
philips 109P40
philips 109B50
Samsung 957DF
samsung 955Df
Mitsubishi Diamond plus 935B
Mitsubishi DV1995G
or would you recommend I try and find a 2nd hand sony G420.

Yeah, I think Ham is a little drunk tonight! Just kidding Ham!... Or am I? lol
The SMALLER the number, the better!
Get the Samsung 957DF! It's a pretty sweet monitor, my friend has one and it looks just as good as my Sammy 997DF.
