I need to upgrade my harddrive to a much larger one and I was looking at the western digital caviar 120 gb. I know my hard drive now is a fat32(40gb) or so windows says, not sure what that means just trying to be descriptive.

I need to know before I buy the hard drive, are there going to be any problems with the install, I don't want or need the old drive I just want to transfer the old to the new. Please if there are any step-by-step guides out there I would really appreciate it??

there are instructions that come with the drive, and usually some utilities that allow you to do a straight drive to drive copy

installing one is not that hard, just make sure you have a bay in the system available, a powercable, and an ide cable with an available plug

ie. the utilities that come with the hard drive will walk you through the setup of the drive

Most hard drive manufacturers make available free programs for copying drives. Check the Western digital web site.

You can use 3rd party software to "clone" your old hard drive...such as DriveCopy or Norton Ghost...or as jim suggested, you can go to the Western Digital website & download their free Windows based utility "Data Lifeguard Tools V. 11.0"

Just make sure that you read the ReadMe files before installing. I believe that you should not format the drive prior to using the copy utility.
