Weird reading of hard disk

I thought that I had lost all my files because my pc could not read my backup drive. I have now tried it in another different computer, and that can read it. Sort of. Basically, if I right click the drive in explorer, the pie chart shows 13Gb used (which is correct). But when I open up the drive to view the files, many are missing. In fact, I can only see 1.6Gb of them. Has anyone else had this problem, or know a way to get my other files back? Thanks in advance...

Martyn, try this.
Open up the drive to view the files.
Go to, Tools > Folder Options
Under the tab, "View", check "Show hidden files and folders"
Then scroll down and uncheck the box that says, "Hide protected operating system files"
Click Apply.
Do anymore files show up?

After trying this I ran check disk on it and that fixed the problem - all the files were readable. But I had wasted 6 hours lol. I'm sure though that if I would have run check disk first it would have screwed it up and made the disk unreadable...
