I purchased an HP dv4000 laptop about a year ago and I have been very pleased with it, that is, until about a month ago. I have encountered a problem that I have never even heard of before.
After working flawlessly, the laptop has a tendency to randomly freeze up. Everything would stop--the pointer, the clock, etc..
Over time I have discovered that I can get the computer to un-freeze by either pressing down rather hard in the middle of the mousepad, on either side of the mousepad, the bottom of the computer, on the back of the battery, or by holding the screen in a certain position. When the right amount of pressure is placed, the computer would suddenly unfreeze, and everything is fine. But once the pressure is released, the computer freezes again. However, this problem is not consistent at all. After some time, the computer will sometimes come out of this moody state and work flawlessly without me applying any pressure. Sometimes I'll turn it on and not encounter a problem at all.
It's a strange problem and I can't figure out what causes it to happen, why applying pressure to certain parts of the computer gets it working again, nor how to permentely fix it.
Does anyone have any idea of what is going on and how I can fix it?
Thank you!

I think that model may be one of the ones they recalled for faulty batteries as they get too hot and can start a fire or damage the mobo. Contact HP to see if this applies to yours

Unbelievable. I have the same problem and did not know until now that if i press firmly on the middle of the touchpad that it unfreezes. I dont understand this. I also did not realize the freeze was affecting the system clock time but does explain why after a month my clock is an hour behind. Please someone help.

Me too! You press down over the DVD drive (right hand corner) next to the mousepad, and it's like new. Other symptoms: USB ports no longer recognize items attached, etc.
What is going on here?

I have a similar problem. When I leave my HP DV4000 laptop for 20 mins or so, it doesn't comeback out of hibernation mode. I hear a sort of click every 15-20 secs. I haven't even tried pressing down on the mousepad or anything like that.
In fact I haven't even moved my laptop all that often. Does anyone know if the hard-drive might be the problem?
argghhhhh...

I doubt it's the hard drive. The machine recovers 100% after pressing down in the touchpad area or on the touchpad itself. However, the problem is getting progressively worse. I think its a layer seperation on the motherboard, or a bad contact. This is really bad news, and sounds like servicing. I am going to get in touch with HP today and see what I can come up with, and keep you all posted.

I have just gotten off HP technical support. The machine is being sent in - I bought it in December, and it has a one year warranty.
The symptoms look like a bad electrical contact on the mainboard, either through a bad solder joint or some kind of delamination. Implications are probably a new motherboard.
Oops. Hope everyone here is still on a warranty. I pointed out this thread to the technician on the phone a HP. He saw it and was surprised. He has not had one service call on a dv4000 in about four weeks, i.e. so far they are considered rock solid.
