Hello all!
I have somewhat of a weird problem. This summer I had win xp installed and got a blue screen of death. I thought it was the HDD so I bought a new one. Now I installed fedora earlier, and after 2 reboots the bios said there was no operating system. So I tried installing windows vista and I got a blue screen, and XP doesn't let me create a partition (I create one and when I get back to the select a partition, I only get a unpartitioned space)So I don't really know what's going on, but I have a new hard disk and have the same problem. Can it be the bios? Motherboard? RAM?
I didn't do anything special before all of this started. Didn't have a virus.
Any love?
Thanks :)

My initial guess is a motherboard problem. It is obviously not detecting that you have a HDD attached which would explain your problems. Try investing in a new motherboard.
When you try to partition, does it say how much free space you have on your drive?

This is a laptop computer. You don't just run out and get another motherboard.
lonecrow
What size are the old and new drives?

OK. More info. My IT guy at work tolm me it could be a bad chip controller on the motherboard as well?
BTW, here's the error from a windows installation: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0x8A58A8AA, 0x81603B58, 0x81603854)
My new HDD, the one I bought, is a samsung 80 gig, my old one was a Hitachi 80gig. IDE.
So if it's not my HDD, and this is a laptop, I'm screwed right? :$

Well, the repair may cost more than the Laptop is worth.
Clearing the CMOS and resetting the needed valuses may be worth a shot. You will need to remove the MBoard battery to do that.
This issue didn't start until you replaced the hard drive? The blue screen may have been something totally different.
Maybe you didn't get the cable on tight when you installed the new drive. Or the BIOS may not fully support the larger drive. I am assuming the new drive is larger. Is it?

Or bent a pin installing the hd. Carefully pull it out again and use a small flashlite to inspect both connections.
on the road again!!

Well yeah, both HDD are fine that I know. And I can still boot the computer with a live cd, but the thing is I cannot write anything on the drive... So that has to be some sort of connector trouble righ? And in the Bios, the place where it's written my brand of HDD has !!!!!!!!!!! at the end of my drive. Anyone knows if that could be a clue?

You think? See the latter part of #5. You never said if the drive is larger than the original even though I asked.

Well I did specify at the end of post Number 4 that the drive was a 80g like the previous one.
UPDATE: I flashed my bios with the current one, changed my cmos battery, opened the whole thing and cleaned it well.
Nothing has changed. Here is a screenshot of the bios, this might be of some help whatsoever. I don't have anything left to try. Any suggestion?
