Weird fish-eye type screen appears

Specs: Windows XP
I get this weird fish-eye sort of screen upon boot up of my desktop computer. Do you know what this is from. After the computer has been operating for about 15 minutes of it all of a sudden switches to a "normal" looking screen. When acting strange, it's the individual windows that look sort of fish-eye and curved on the sides, plus many icons are missing as the font of the ones remaining get huge.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thank you,
Mike

Is the monitor a CRT or LCD screen?

To test it from cold, disconnect the monitor from the PC and then turn it on.

You should get an on-screen-display saying something like Signal out of range.

You can access the monitor image controls. Is the image distorted? I suspect it will be. CRT monitors have controls to shape & focus the Cathode Rays ( Electron stream) and I suspect your monitor is having problems that are evident when cold but correct once the thing warms up.

Repair is not economically viable. Time to invest in a new monitor

Thank you. I'll try that next time I'm at that computer. It's at my friend's house. Guess I best be on the look out for a good deal on a monitor. Thanks for your time and expertise.
