Hello everyone!

I have a question.

I have a motherboard that supports SATA2.
I have 3 hard disk drives :

1. WD Raptor SATA1 70GB (10.000rpm)
2. WD SATA2 (7200rpm) 120GB
3. WD SATA1 (7200rpm) 400GB

Which is faster? WD Raptor SATA1 at 10.000rpm or SATA2 at 7200rpm ?

I want to know that, for me to configure which disk I have to install to gain more speed in my OS (Windows XP Pro sp2)

Thank you in advance!

Digital Family.

The Raptor will always be faster. If you want to tweak it a little more to get some more ump out of it, I suggest tweakhound xp. Also if you want the operating system to be more efficient, make a partition on the 120 or 400 for the programs files.

Raptor is definitely a better drive but it only has around 74 gigs for the cheaper model and i believe that the sata2 version of that raptor is only a few bucks more so would be alot more worthwhile but after a while a second drive with more capacity for storage might be necessary.

There is little performance difference between ATA100, SATA, & SATA2. However, the Raptors are the fastest HDDs currently available...most expensive too, especially when you consider the cost per GB.

Good article about it here:

That's a great article jam.

The message is that for MOST home desktop PCs, buy the cheapest 7200 RPM HDD that is big enough for your needs.

Just happened to be cruising Tom's Hardware again today & missed this article about Raptors vs RAID-0. The conclusion pretty much says it all & might change your mind:

Hey jam, interesting article. But he already has the 70 GB raptor. So might as well take advantage of it.

Use the raptor as your boot (C:) drive and install all your program files to THAT drive. You'll feel the speed.

Keep all your data on other physical hard drives.

Use System Restore ONLY on your C: drive.
