A year ago I hired someone to use WD My Book Essential to back up my laptop. She did so and left.

Now I want to do a full backup. I plugged in the device -- in the electric outlet and in the USB port. I could hear the device's hard drive start to spin at the same time the laptop's display went black. I assumed some sort of backup had begun, and after 20 minutes the HD was still spinning. I went out for 40 minutes. When I returned, the hard drive had stopped, but the display was still black, and I couldn't get the laptop to do anything. I finally did a hard shutdown and rebooted. As soon as Win XP was finished, the screen turned black again. I then unplugged the device from wall and port and rebooted. Reboot was successful (without the device) and no harm seems to have been done to the laptop.

But how can I see what the contents of the device now is? How do I prevent the display from turning black when the device is plugged in?

Sound like that your WD external drive has failure, try it on different system and confirm that.
