A couple of days ago I installed a 5 Gb hard disk to my computer, which already had a 40 Gb Western Digital Caviar hd. Days went by and then I started to hear a clicking noise from the computer. I thought it might be the 5 Gb hd going to power save or something.
Then, I was playing a game when it started to slow down and it crashed. After that every program crashed one by one. I resetted the machine, but Windows wouldn't boot anymore, it was stuck to the welcome screen. The WD had gone bad.

I managed to save all important files from the broken disk to another hard disk, and at some bootups the WD didn't even start spinning.

I already bought a new hd, but I was just wondering what might've caused the disk failure. Was it only a coincidence that the old WD broke days after the installation of the 5 Gb backup drive? I have a 300 W power source, if that has anything to do with that.

Weak power supplies have on occasionally caused the clicking problem with hard drives. It's 'possible' that the 5gb drive is drawing a whole lot of current and loading down the power supply. Try the 40gb with the 5gb disconnected.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

Just curious how old that 5 gig drive is. I haven't seen any new drives, online or in the stores, under 40 gigs in ages. Is it really a new 5 gig? If so, I'm curious where you got it. If it's not new, that might be your problem - unfortunately, drives don't last forever.

The 5 Gb drive is not new, it's a Quantum Fireball EX and I just installed it as a backup drive. But, it wasn't that drive that broke, the WD 40Gb drive did.

I was a devoted Western Digital user for years - then, about the time they dropped their standard warranty from five years to three, I noticed all kinds of strange things happening. Like drives dying way too soon. So, at least from my perspective, it's no coincidence. Also, considering the drop in their warranty period, I think Western Digital knows they're not making 'em like they used to!
