I gave my old PC to my sister in law and after two weeks she rang saying it had died. I got it into my garage(workshop) and sure enough, it powered on, sounded good but NOTHING on the monitor, tried a different monitor, same thing. OK, tried a new video card, same thing. OK, back to basics, I removed every card except the original video card & it worked! Great, so now I start inserting the cards & I get to an internal Conextant modem & it kills the machine!
Now, I have been in this business a long time but I cannot imagine how a duff modem can stop a PC dead. Even if the PCI buss was being held down I would have expected an AGP video card to work so I am quite puzzled by this one. My sister in law did confirm there had been an electrical storm but she was not aware of any damage locally but it does appear that the modem got fried.
If anyone has a logical explanation for this I'd love to hear it.
Rgds,
Bob Mitchell.

A short circuit through your modem (a likely target in an electrical storm) could EASILY cause this behavior.

Still and all that is pretty amazing, though I have seen a bad modem prevent bootup also, but in that case it was one I had just installed, so I knew it had to be that.

Any card in the machine (with the right problem) is capable of causing the system not to come up. That goes for drives also.
