Was given a used computer

Specs: Windows XP, 2.4/1.5 ram
A buddy had this computer sitting in his office and gave to me cuz no one used it. I took it home and turned it on. I went to the device manager to check out the hardware, only to find that the device manager screen doesn't pop up. I then went to used the Search feature in the start button, only to have the monitor just show the monitor's wallpaper for a about 2 seconds. then the icon would appear again. The task bar then changes color from blue to Beige, and reverts to the old style of windows. I want to use the computer for some music work i do but audio driver will only work every now and then. I have run anti viruses and reg cleaners. I downloaded SP3 thru firefox, because It would not let me down load it thru IE. I am wondering if it is a hardware issue. I don't have a back up disk for it so reformatting it is most likely not possible. Any help?

You never know what you'll get with a hand-me-down computer.

My advice, evaluate the hardware to see what OS will best run on it. Then, purchase the OS CD and start from scratch.

Might run linux on it if you can't get your xp/me/win98/win95 or win3x working.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10
