W7 won't recognize 2nd hard drive

Microsoft Windows 7 professional

Specs: W7 Pro, AMD triple core/4gig
I'm trying to copy some data off an old "C" drive that I tried unsuccessfully to recover with Acronis (it's a long story). The drive was working fine before I did this. Now it won't boot Windows. No problem, I think to myself - I'll just plug the drive into the external dock on my 2nd pc and copy the data.

When the drive is powered up I hear the 2 tone sound that the computer usually makes when I attach an external. However, when I open Windows Explorer the drive never appears. But if I open device manager I can see it.

Anyone have an idea on how I can get the computer to "officially recognize" this drive so I can rescue the data? TIA.

Since it crashed, the TOC or media descriptor is bad. WIndows doesn't recognise the file system. There are recovery applications that you can try. Some are free. Since you have used Acronis, it's doubtful that others will do much better.
Once you format the drive you can use it again (all existing data will be permanently lost), but I would be cautious and NOT rely on this drive for archival storage.
