W7 laptop shuts down when running on AC power

Specs: Windows 7
Hi i have a philips freevents laptop that has suddenly developed a strange problem! heres the deal.
when the laptop is running on battery power everything is fine and the laptop runs perfectly however as soon as i plug in the mains adaptor the laptop shuts down within a matter of minutes???
i am using the original power lead and have done since the day i purchased it, i have checked the vents and cleaned them but still no joy i even tried installing eveything again and starting from scratch but i still have the issues.
now here is the strange bit.........if i have my iphone plugged into my laptop the laptop doesnt shutdown????? but as soon as i unplug the phone it shuts down ??
anyone have any idea what could be causing this issue?

There may be some issue with connector or how the power management is working.

You may find clues in event logs.

Might boot to bios and watch any health numbers when you attempt the ac.

Might be other programs to monitor laptop voltages or temps.
