Comment:

I bought a 80gb External Hard drive and I have installed it and it runs great, but my question is...

Is there a way to set say... 3 gb of that as virtual memory? Is there a maximum to how much I can set? Will my system actually run faster?

I only Batch if possible, 2000 more lines of code, oh well.

you can use it as pagefile,
Pagefile is an area on the harddisk where windows will use it as if it were ram,

control pannel>system>advenced>performance settings>advanced
it is at the bottem called virtual memory click change and change your initial size to 1.5X your Ram then click set.

Hope that is what you wanted

Oh sorry, i didnt see the rest.

Windows cannot recognise more then 3 gig or ram (maby 4 i cant remember). and will your system run faster? well it depends on how much you have now really, but if you have 2g or more then i wouldnt think so, and if you have less i think you might see a small increse

2 gbs including virtual memory now?
I knew how to change it, I was more worried about weather I could set it on another drive...

I only Batch if possible, 2000 more lines of code, oh well.

Do NOT use an external HDD for virtual memory. If you want better performance, you could create a dedicated partition on the internal HDD & use it strictly for the page file, but I don't know if it's worth it. Unless you know what you're doing, it's probably best to just let Windows handle it.

Using an external drive for virtual memory probably isn't a good idea, even if you could do it. External drives are much slower than their internal brethren.

You are confusing System RAM with virtual RAM. Win 32 bit OSes are restricted to 4GB of system RAM.

No 2gb as in 2 x 1gb sticks of ram (or 1 2gb stick) and now actually reading your post i kind of missunderstood you, i was saying how to change it, but you where asking can you with an external drive XD

Well i havnt tried this myself (because i dont own one) but im not 100% on this one, how does it show up in My computer, just f:/ like a hard drive or removable storage device f:/. And besides, dont you have like 1-2g spare on your primary harddrive?

Let windows handle your virtual memory, and don't use an external drive for the pagefile.

If you have more than one internal hard drive and it's on the secondary controller, putting your pagefile on it would help a little bit, but probably not enough to be noticeable.

I agree. Don't use an external drive for your pagefile. If you have a separate partition on your OS drive, then set the pagefile to be stored on that. Making sure that you set the pagefile on C to none. You'll have to click Set after you change it before setting the other drive's pagefile.
