Hi! I have a Chaintech mobo 7NIF2 (http://www.chaintechusa.com/tw/eng/product_spec.asp?PISNo=15)
It has the NVIDIA nForce2 IGP + nForce2 MCP chipset and the video is Integrated NVIDIA NV17-class (GeForce4 MX) GPU.

The strange problem is is that when I try to watch video with it, I get random sharp white horizonal streaks across the screen. Particularly when I move the time slider a bit. More when it starts playing, less after. They can appear a few times a second or every few seconds. I've tried changing all sorts of the "overlay" settings, but the streaks still show no matter what I do. The only thing that gets rid of them is if I turn down the accelaration to below the DirectX usage (like in the middle), but then, the video becomes much more pixelated. (I think particularly if I'm watching video that's 240 high, and I make it full screen so then it's larger, like 320 high. I tried on a different computer with Via video, and it works fine, but the pixelation is there. I suppose the NVIDIA has great interpolation alogarithms that smooth out all pixelation when you enlarge video.

But the streaking is kind of annoying. Anyone have any ideas where the streaking may be coming from? I was thinking of trying a different power supply, moving the RAM to another slot, different RAM, possible BIOS settings... I looked all over the web but I don't see anything specific...

Make sure you have the nForce2 chipset drivers installed:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_udp_winxp_5.10.html

And use these video drivers:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_71.89.html

You really should have more RAM & a *real* video card

Thanks, I will check those links. I did install all the drivers from Chaintech, and I did try in a desperate attempt to use drivers from nVidia but the install said it was the wrong hardware. Maybe I had the wrong file.

Someone gave me this computer as junk.

I never liked the onboard video solutions, nor the onboard audio ones. Why are they so bad??? :-(

Well I just got the drivers you specified, Jam, and the problem is GONE! Looks like the all-in-one version I got from Chaintech wasn't too good. Now I even have really beautiful audio controls, and an easy-quick video settings tool on the toolbar. I can even set my resolution to 640x480 (previously impossible) and all sorts of other resolutions that my lcd doesn't support.

Well now I'm real happy--this problem was driving me nuts!!!

Thanks so much Jam!!!

Tek.

Well, maybe I was too happy--upon further testing, I still see streaks, but maybe not as bad. HOWEVER, I did notice before that the streaks only appear if the video window is enlarged: ie. the video is 576x240, and the resolution was 800x600, so to fill the width, the video needs to be enlarged. So enlarging it more than say, 25%, made the streaks start to appear.

Well, the way it's totally solved now is that due to the drivers from nVidia, I can set the resolution to 640x480, which is very close to 576 (640 vs. 576) so when I make the video full screen, it only enlarges a little and that is apparently not enough to cause the streaks to show up.

It's a shame that the usual WinXP video drivers don't allow 640x480, and it's nice that the nVidia drivers do allow it. Extra capabilities can be handy sometimes even when the idiot ms programmers don't predict it.

Why the streaking shows up and what it is, is another question. Maybe something isn't fast enough to do a good job of upscaling quickly enough, so it corrupts some data?
