Hello,
I have recently purchased a Geforce FX 5600 256mb AGP. The installation process went fine, no errors or anything. My old card was a geforce 3 64mb.
Now, im wondering why my computer freezes so much. It seems to happen most when i run programs that take more CPU power. But sometimes I get it while just surfing the net or moving shortcuts on my desktop.
Before, I never had these problems, with freezing that is. I believe that this could be 1 of 2 problems or both.
1) I need to change something In my BIOS to make it compatible.
2) I need more power supply.Currently I have a 200 watt power supply, and I noticed just now on the box it says 250 watt is required and 300 is recommended.
This may be the problem.IF I need a new powersupply, What do I need?? how many watts, kinda connections , etc...Could you give me a link to a good one for my pc??
1.4ghz amd microstar mobo
512 SDRAM
Geforce FX 5600 256mb AGP
Sound blaster live!
Linksys ethernet card 10/100
Cd-rom drive
CD-R drive
floppy drive
60 gigabyte harddriveThis is a list of just about every component in my computer setup, I gave this to you so you know how much i need to power.
If this so happens NOT to be the problem, which is unlikely, what would I need to change in the bios??
I really appreciate your time and help, thanks.

Now that I think about it, I really am not sure how many watts my power supply is right now...How do I find out?

Open up the computer, and look at the label on the power supply, see what it says. If it's only 200W, I would HIGHLY recommend a new one (at least 350W).

I'm assuming you have an Intel processor...
Antec's True Series PS's can't be beat. If and when you buy a new PS, it's definitely worth the investment.
Their 430W should be more than enough for your system. Check the pricing sites, pricewatch.com, pricegrabber.com, etc., for current prices (should be around 75 bucks).
Also, do you have the latest drivers for you 5600?
Do you have anything on your system overclocked?
Could also be a heat issue, try running your system with the side panel off, and a fan blowing into your case.

these things get snapped up quickly but here's a link for a $39 refurbed Fortron quiet 400W. Excellent product.

I am running an AMD. I have Dx9a..the latest drivers and all that.
It is not a heat issue unless it can overheat at 63degrees F.
This temp is with the side panel off and a large fan blowing into it.
Thanks johnoh for the link, but do I really have to spend 40 bucks on a PS?? I mean, I just spent 250 for the card :P

Nice site, I searched around some more on newegg.com (which i didnt know about before) and found these:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=58&manufactory=1849&DEPA=1&sortby=14&order=1Wont the 300w or 350w be good enough? Because the 200watt i have now is good enough for everything but my FX card. When I have the Geforce3 in it works perfect, no freezes or anything. BTW i dont need the best PSU out there, whatever runs my system.
Thanks!

wow, 200 Watts? I'm surprised your computer even starts up with all that stuff in there! If your PS is truly a 200 W then you definately should upgrade it. Look on http://www.pricewatch.com. I would pick the lowest priced non-generic one you could find. You might want to go with 400 W in case you want to add anything else to your computer in the future, such as a second hard drive or more pci cards and such.
Also, I dont know how hot those new cards get, but if i were you i would download Hmonitor or some other program to show you the temperature just in case it is getting really hot. You can get Hmonitor at http://www.hmonitor.com
