Video Files disappeared from hard drive

Hewlett-packard Simplesave 1tb portable...

Specs: Windows XP
I have been storing my mpeg4 video files on my external hard drive (HP Simple Save) all in one folder. The other day when I went into the folder all of the video files had disappeared and the folder was empty. The 'date modified' information for that folder showed the last time I had put new files in the folder and I had not noticed anything different at that time. I also have all of the video files in my Itunes library, however usually when the source files have been moved or deleted Itunes will indicate the the files could not be found. Only some of the files in Itunes (which were all located in the same folder) are indicating that they could not be found so maybe some of the files are still there and I just can't see them?

What could cause all of the files to disappear and how can I recover them?

show hidden files and look for them again.
If u can't find them use RECUVA.

I already had 'show hidden files and folders' ticked so that wasn't the problem. I tried RECUVA too and it didn't find anything. I have also done a system restore on my computer to the day before I last saw the files and that didn't bring them back either. I don't know what else to try.

sometimes it may be due to virus also.

were all mpeg files were in the single folder or in some folders within the the folders?
try to write the path to files in the address bar, most of the times it helps me alot
