the most i have seen is 1gig on a video card. However these video cards ARE NOT BY ANY MEANS MENT FOR GAMING. if you drop 1k on a card with 1gig of memory, it's most likely meant to be for 3d design, imaging, stuff like that. But when you try to game on it it will be ass-slow =\. Most high-end video cards today will have anywhere from 256-512 mb of GDDR3, and if you really think you need half a gig of video ram, go for it. You will find however it isn't THAT much of a performance boost, and its a hell of a lot more spensive, last time i checked.

Intel P4 3.4ghz
ATi X850 XT PE
2 Gigs Corsair XMS
WD Caviar 200gig 16m CachWD Caviar 200gig 16m Cache
Thermaltake Bigwater WC system, additional Zalman block on VGA
Thermaltake Armor Ca

Most of today's single high-end top gaming cards come with 512MB, such as the 7900GTX and the X1900XTX...
There is one single gaming card on the market right now which has 1GB, the 7950GX2, which costs around $600,-

AMD64 San Diego @ 3GHz
Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe
2GB OCZ GOLD DDR500
Asus EN7900GTX 512MB
Maxtor 250GB 16MB SATAII
WD 160GB 8MB IDE

Remember, texture memory is still memory which is STORAGE NOT SPEED. But that storage can be applied to give better performance. Key word is performance here. Speed is a moot point. The 6800GS (typically 425 mhz) is actually slower than the FX5800 Ultra which had core clock speeds of 500mhz. Both are 256 bit memory interface, both are 256MB video cards. Both are Direct X 9 capable. But when it comes down to it, the 6800GS blows it away. Even the 128MB version kills it. Or how about the 6600GT? That's typically a 128 bit memory interface card with 128MB of video memory and that can run circles around an FX5800 Ultra. Higher end versions of the 6600GT are 256 bit and 256MB but they clost a little much. There's more to video cards than memory size: memory clock speed, pixel pipelines, communication route, veretx processors, register size and more.
