Hi,

If it is onboard video, it could be changed in your bios set up, however that would diminish the amount of memory used by the system to run the operating system and programs. You might not be able to adjust the onboard video to a higher setting if the board and BIOS doesn't make provisions for it.

If it is a stand alone card in either the AGP slot, or PCI slot, you'll have to shell out more money to purchase a better card.

It would help to determine either case if you gave the motherboard or computer make and model.

It helps a little, just a little. Is there a model number somewhere on the outside of the case?

Another aproach we can use, Can you find where the video cable plugs into the back of the computer. Is along the bottom (or side in a tower configuration) along with lots of other connectors, or is it on it's own in one of the perpendicular slots?

OK it's onboard video.

If you have a look in the CMOS setup, Somewhere, possibly advanced features, you will find something like 'Memory reserved for onboard video'. Different manufacturers use different terminology. Be careful not to change anything you are not sure of. When you find a reference like that, try changing the value and see what is available. The instructions to change values is on the bottom of the screen. If you are happy with the changes, choose the save and exit option, if unsure opt for the exit without saving.

It is possible that you cannot go any further than 8 MB, this was fairly common in a machine the age of yours.

Don't ya just hate that!

There are ways to get around BIOS passwords, there usually backdoor passwords installed by the BIOS 'manufacturer'. Could you post the brand of BIOS. It appears on the first screen after you boot.

Yes, you could add a PCI video card, just make sure you disable the onboard one in BIOS. Arrgh!!!!!

Hey Rimfire,

If you don't know the BIOs password, the best way to clear it is to pull the CMOs battery. Typing jibberish could take forever, while removing the battery will reset the BIOs to default values thus clearing the password.

You might want to print this out

Yes sometimes removing the battery will clear the password. However, frequently it does not. Not being able to access the BIOS after clearing it would be even worse!

Those passwords are known manufacturer backdoor passwords, not just gibberish. Yes I too was surprised at the number of combinations!

How long did you leave the battery out? There should be a cmos jumper near the battery, use it to reset the bios memory.

Notoys, as Tony so eloquently pointed out, removing the battery might help. Seeing as his post was more about critisism, he omitted the instructions.

Before removing the battery, shut down the computer and remove the power cord. This step is very important. You'll need to leave the battery out for at least two minutes.

There's often a jumper which can be moved to clear CMOS. The instructions to use this varies between manufacturers. Sometimes it disconnects the battery. Sometimes you need to power on with this jumper set.

This thread is getting rather long, perhaps it's time to mention, if a game requires more than 8 Meg of video, a 350Mhz processor might not be fast enough either.
