Hi --

We're looking to upgrade our Gateway 830GM (P4 processor at 3 ghz, with 1 gig RAM but I'm planning to buy another 1 gig RAM stick - can I just slot that in to go to 2 gigs?) and add a new video card so we can play Fallout 3 and other games.

Right now, we have an nVidia 6600 (bought the computer a few years back and haven't used it while overseas) and we'd like to go to something more powerful. What would you recommend? We have a PCI x16 slot we can use, but the power supply is rated at a max output of 305 watts, which I think may be the limiting factor.

We're probably going to get a new computer in a few months so I don't really want to get a new power supply, motherboard, etc. at this point. Is there a card that I can use with this power supply that'll let me run Fallout3 (min. spec nVidia 6800)? Where can I find it? Ideally, I'd like to get as good a card as I can, so that I could swap it into the new computer, but it looks like most 8800 GTs need at least 400 watts, so maybe I can just get something in the 7000 series for now?

Any advice would be great -- I'm not real up on video cards and power requirements these days!

Thanks,
Kilrathi

Edited to add - I saw someone recommend the Radeon 4670 at the following link (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121274) as being fairly high-speed (enough for my purposes) and a low power draw. What do you think? Can I run that on this set-up in terms of power? Will I get at least acceptable, if not amazing, performance from Fallout 3?

The Radeon HD 4670 is an excellent choice. It's a low power card (consumes less than 60W) but still offers decent gaming performance, plus it's relatively cheap. You should have no problem with your current PSU.
