I posted a foeum like this but got too old so i'm bringing it back to life

I recently got a Gateway 2000 g6- 266 pentium 2 pc. When i powered it on, it gave 3 beeps, then about a minute later it gives a 4th beep. Douring the 1st 3, the 3 kb lights stay on then go off letting me turn them on or
off. I never get a video signal throught the pci video card. I know the hdd is fine because i installed windows me on it on another computer. What is the problem?

Thanks,

Then got this

check bios central for a referance to what th ebeep codes mean

I replied with the following

Ok, according to http://bioscentral.com/beepcodes/amibeep.htm, that beep sequence refers to Failure in video system An error was encountered in the video BIOS ROM, or a horizontal retrace failure has been encountered.

I guess i would have to replace the video card.
FYI- It still makes the 3 beeps without the video card installed. Would buying a working isa, pci or mabey even agp card help. This has agp but i want to go with pci. Will it fix it?

Well, would a new video card fix it?

Thanks

There are no guarantees, but it's the first thing to try.

I don't know how much old hardware you have, but.

This could be a hardware conflict problem, hard to say.

What I'd do.

First, try a (some) other video cards.

Unplug EVERYTHING you can, all the drives, all other cards, modems, soundcards, etc.

Reset the bios. If you don't know how, find and remove the battery, let it set for about 1/2 hour with the POWER OFF of course.

Try to boot to the setup/bios WITH ALL THE HARDWARE OUT

In other words, hook up ONLY

The motherboard, cpu, and ram

The keyboard and monitor, and the power supply

NO floppy, extra cards, or hdd or CDROM

Does it have an AGP slot? (doubtful)
