I'm in the market for a new video card, currently I have a GeForce 2 MX 32MB and I have my mind set on getting the Sapphire Radeon 9600 256MB DDR. It retails at around $170. Will this be a wise upgrade? My GeForce can still play the latest games but not very fast(actually very slowly), will the Radeon 9600 give me what I need? To play the latest games with a good frame rate?
Thanks.

I have a radeon 9600se 128 mb, and i use it to play halo its dx 9 so its powerful enough to handle ps 2.0, and i get about 30-40 fps at 800 x 600 resoultion, and halo is a very demanding game. it def a good buy

It is wierd, I am able to play some games pretty well with my GeForce 2 such as (GTA3, Vice City, UT, NBA Live 2004(low setting)) Then there are other games that went so slow that I didnt even enjoy playing them such as (Nascar Racing 2003, Battlefield 1942, True Crime) It seems my video card can't handle when there is lots of objects drawn on screen at once. Hopefully the Radeon 9600 will be able to handle this.

I got one, and was thoroughly disappointed. So took it straight back.
I now have a Geforce 5600 128meg and am not impressed with that either.
If you want to spend that much money, you should consider throwing a tiny bit more at it, and just get a 9700 or something in that league. I can play HALO with my setup, but still lags a little, even with Geforce 5600. I am aiming for Radeon 9800 or Geforce FX 5900 sometime soon.

I also have the option of buying the MSI-GeForce FX5600XT 128MB DDR, DVI, W/TV OUT
would you say it is better than the Radeon 9600 256MB?

The 5600xt is crap, and don't get a SE card as they have ver low performance, try aiming for a Radeon 9800 Pro, you can get them for about $200 and is much faster than a Radeon 9600 and the 9800 Pro will last you a long time

The article fro TomsHardware gives the 9600 decent scores. Check it out at the link below and decide for yourself ..

Good luck,

Yes but DECENT means great if you already got it. But if you are buying a NEW card, and spending $150+ you'll want it to at least last you 12 months! And the 9600 won't give a decent performance on games like DOOM3 so before Christmas get's here, it is already second rate.
