I recently got a new computer (2.66 mhz Celeron with 256 RAM with Windows XP) and switched my graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce MX 420-PNY Technologies). My last computer was an HP Celeron 600 mhz 256 RAM and my graphics card (PCI) worked great. I ran Half-Life and Jedi Outcast and other games just fine with high resolutions. I put the card in the PCI slot, installed the drivers and connected the monitor to the card. But it's like the computer switches to another user. All I see is my desktop wallpaper. No icons or taskbar or anything. I can see my mouse put the screen appears to have shrunk because it disappears a few inches away from the center of the screen. I created a Notepad document while i was connected to my GeForce card and saved it to the desktop. When I connect the monitor to my factory graphics card (an Intel Graphics Card), everything returns to the desktop, but the Notepad file I created is gone. It's like the two video cards have their own users.
Is there anything I can do? I tried a game with the factory graphic card and it seemed much slower than it was on my old computer, which was 1/5 the speed of this computer (both cards - GeForce and Intel - are 64 mb). I've never had this happen. Thanks!

Your 1st mistake was buying an eMachine, your 2nd mistake was buying an eMachine with a Celeron & only 256mb RAM...lol!
I'm sure you voided the warranty by opening the case & installing a video card...did you have to break a seal to open it?
Did you disable the onboard graphics to free up the "shared RAM"?

I know, I know. But I last had a Celeron and it worked just fine. I did have to break a seal to open the case, yeah.
I don't know if I disabled the onboard graphics. I went into Display in the Control Panel and chose the new graphics card, but had no success. How do I disable the onboard graphics card?
