What you have is a VGA to Component cable. First, some TVs have inputs specifically for use with a computer. For example, on my TV, there are 4 HDMI inputs and the manual specifies that when connecting a computer (using a DVI - HDMI cable in this case), I have to use port #4.

You will also have to play with the display settings on your computer. The resolution, monitor frequency, and bit depth may all need to be changed. Refer to your TV manual or experiment to see what works.
