very wierd startup problem with gateway

June 12, 2011 at 10:38:31
Specs: Windows Vista, 4GB

i m familiar with laptops since a long time and been doing formats and solving small problems on my own.
right now i have a gateway laptop,
when i press power button, the initial gateway screen/ boot screen comes where i have option to press F2 or F10 for boot menu and boot setings.
but the screen remains the same no matter what key i press.
it does not respond to either F2 or F10, or any other key as a mater of fact,
but when i press 1234567890 it makes continuous high frequency beeping sounds and starts up.
here comes the password screen where in the place of password lot of dots are already there as if somebody is pressing any key continuously, and my keyboard is totally nonfunctioning at this time. the sound disappears automatically.
i have tried everything on the blogs
tried onscreen keyboard from ease of access, shuting down,
keeping power button on for a long time, nothing works.
as there is no CD with this laptop, the boot is in the hard drive which i cant access no matter how hard i try,
please help.

While I doubt this will help, have you tried an external keyboard ?

First of all, was it working OK for you previously or is this some junker you picked up somewhere?

You turn it on. It seems like it's not doing anything so you start pressing a bunch of keys. Then some password screen comes up with the password space filled in as if someone had been pressing the keys.

Gee that's not too hard to figure out is it? YOU were the one pressing the keys.

OK, now what password screen is coming up? Is it the windows screen? I figure it must be a gateway or bios password since later you say you can't access the hard drive.

So do this: Start it up and don't press any keys. Give it a few minutes, at least as long as it took for it to get to the password screen. Just wait and see if it gives you an error message. Then post back that message.

no first of all it was working just fine when i shut it down the night before. m using it from last 1 yr without any problem. but i noticed it started heating up and fan is throwing out extra heated air from last 1 month. i keep it cool by keep it raised by puting some support under laptop.
it is the windows password screen,
if i press the power button and wait for response, nothing happens it stays the same,
only one time it proceeded to the password screen after aprox 1 hr. and the same key issue came up.
no key is working at all in the password block.
i can move the cursor but cant delete the already filled password.
have not tried any external keyboard but will try it soon.
i tried on screen keyboard from ease of access, it comesup nicely but no key responding.
any suggestions??????

Post back results when you try the external KB but I doubt that's the problem.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say ". . .only one time it proceeded to the password screen after aprox 1 hr. and the same key issue came up."

So you only got the password screen once? What happens all the other times?

And you said in your original posting that you couldn't access the hard drive but then said you've tried the on-screen keyboard which means it boots OK to windows so the drive is being accessed.

But if it's getting hot you need to get that checked. Heat can cause it to do all kinds of wacky things. You might have a problem with the hard drive as well.
